Executive Meeting Jan. 18, 2022

South Burnaby Garden Club
Executive Virtual Meeting via Zoom
Jan. 18, 2022
Minutes

Called to order at 7:08 by Lucette. Maria, Syl, Elizabeth, Sofia, Vince and Dan logged on to zoom. Welcome to Sofia and Maria, with terms that begin on March 1, 2022.

Treasurer Report: Elizabeth

Interest was 2 cents last month. As we keep records for 7 years, Elizabeth will be shredding records from 2014. The cheque for Nathan Ross (speaker in June) is now stale dated. Elizabeth will reverse it on the December statement. If he contacts us, Elizabeth will re issue. Elizabeth and Lucette have been in contact with the bank, as the GIC that renewed in October was not renewed as requested and it has now been rectified.

Fall Harvest Fair: Lucette and Dan

Nothing to report yet

Membership: Syl

Syl led a short discussion on plans for 2022 and climate change. So many people know we need to do something. Places and organizations want to move ahead but don’t know what to do. Syl said there are eight questions we can ask ourselves as a garden club. Are there any services or anything more that should we be doing? Talking about it, newsletter, community plots. Clients increasingly choose products that show interest in climate change. Not to be our primary focus but how can we be more cognitive of it. Consider a guest speaker, and have climate change as an ongoing business item at every meeting. Things like xeriscaping and little blurbs for the newsletter. Our website should reflect this. Action item: Betty will look at some words and discuss at the March meeting and roll into the year of the garden

Bonsor Liaison: Syl

Meeting by zoom in February

Newsletter: Vince

Deadline is Jan. 19, 2022

Show bench: Betty

No showbench

Speaker Convener: Vacant

No speaker for November

Sunshine

No Report

AGM planning: Lucette

Lucette distributed a draft agenda and the group reviewed it. There will be two resolutions to vote on. One for continuing as a rotating executive committee and another allowing executive meetings via electronic means. Lucette and Elizabeth will share the financials.

No showbench for the February meeting as it has been so cold there is little in the garden.

Old Business

2022 Membership Dues

No changes proposed to the membership dues.

New Business

2022 Year of the Garden

There has been no updated information sent regarding the 2022 Year of the Garden. The B.C. Council is planning on being a sponsor. SBGC should consider a committee for garden days and Burnaby Blooms. Do we have the resources that we can have an information table and provide speakers. Lucette offered to chair the committee. Dan brought up that when we tried to do plant sales at previous Burnaby Rhodo festival there was considerable competition from commercial vendors.

BC Council: Lucette

BC Council looking for articles for their newsletters. We did submit an article at the beginning of the pandemic. Vince would prefer that we prioritize our own newsletter.

Plant sale

Tentative date to be set possibly to co-ordinate with the church.

Maria has a contact of someone who is downsizing, and wishes to sell seedling supplies. Maria will get a list and possibly put it in the next newsletter.

Action item: Syl will contact the church and see what dates they are planning. It was decided that we should plan a sale and if necessary cancel.

Mandeville

Mandeville usually contacts us in early spring to have a table. Will discuss at the next at the next steering committee meeting

Schedule

Lucette will chair February general meeting, February exec meeting and March meeting. Betty will chair March exec meeting and April general meeting. Lucette will send out the remainder of the schedule to August and we will look at the rest of the year later.
